The Simple 4-Step System to Finding One More Sale This Month

You didn’t start your business because you wanted to be a salesperson.
You started it because you’re excellent at what you do. Whether you’re a consultant, a creative, or a service provider, your passion lies in the work itself, not in the "art of the deal."
But here is the uncomfortable truth: if you don’t sell, you don’t have a business. You have a hobby.
For many small business owners, the word "sales" conjures up images of pushy tactics, manipulative psychological tricks, and the dreaded "follow-up" call that feels like harassment. So, you hesitate. You undersell. You wait for people to come to you.
The result? You’re leaving money on the table. Not thousands of pounds every day, perhaps, but certainly one more sale per month.
And that one extra sale? It changes everything. It pays the rent, covers the marketing budget, or finally allows you to take that weekend off.
What if I told you that you could find that extra sale using a simple, ethical sales framework that feels as natural as a chat with a friend?
Here is the 4-step system we teach in our free One More Sale Blueprint.
Step 1: Connect (Stop Pitching, Start Listening)
Most sales training tells you to "always be closing." We believe you should "always be connecting."
The biggest mistake small business owners make is jumping into a pitch too early. You see a problem, you know you can fix it, and you start talking. But until the person across from you feels heard, they aren’t ready to listen.
Ethical sales starts with a genuine conversation. Your goal in this first step is to build rapport and, more importantly, to qualify the lead.
Ask for permission: "Can I ask a few questions to see if I’m actually the right fit to help you?"
Be human: Use their name, remember the details, and stop trying to sound like a corporate robot.
Check the fit: If you realise they aren't a good match for your services, say so. Telling someone "I don't think I'm the best person for this, but here’s who is" builds more trust than a thousand successful pitches ever could.

Step 2: Clarify (The Power of Consultative Selling Questions)
Once you’ve connected, it’s time to dig deeper. This is where you move from a "chat" to a consultative selling conversation.
Instead of telling them what you do, you need to help them understand what they need. Most people don’t actually know the root of their problem; they only know the symptoms.
Use these consultative selling questions to help them (and you) get clear:
"What prompted you to look for help with this right now?"
"What have you tried before, and why didn't it work?"
"If we solved this today, what would that change for your business next month?"
By asking these questions, you aren’t being "nosy." You are being helpful. You are helping them articulate their goals, which makes the eventual solution feel like a logical next step rather than a forced purchase.

Step 3: Co-create (The Non-Pushy Solution)
This is where the magic happens. Traditional sales is about presenting a solution. Ethical sales is about co-creating one.
Instead of saying "Here is my package, it costs £1,000," try framing it as a choice. People hate being sold to, but they love to buy. When you give them options, you give them autonomy.
The "Good, Better, Best" Framework: Offer two or three ways to work with you. Explain the trade-offs of each honestly.
"Option A is the quickest fix, but it requires more of your time."
"Option B is a full-service approach where we handle everything for you."
When you present options like this, you aren't "pushing" a product. You are acting as a guide, helping them choose the path that fits their budget and their needs. It removes the pressure from you to "make the sale" and puts the power back in the customer’s hands.

Step 4: Check-in (How to Follow Up Without Being Annoying)
This is the step where most small business owners fall over. You’ve had a great chat, they seemed interested, but then... silence.
You don't want to be a pest, so you wait. And wait. And the sale dies.
The secret to how to follow up without being annoying is to shift your mindset from "checking in" to "adding value."
Never say "Just checking in": It’s a meaningless phrase that puts pressure on the lead.
Always add value: Send a link to an article that relates to your chat. Share a tip. Answer a question they asked during the call.
Make "No" safe: Explicitly tell them it’s okay to say no. "If you’ve decided this isn't the right time, just let me know, I won't be offended, and I'll stop the follow-ups."
By making it safe for them to say no, you actually make it much easier for them to say yes.
The Hidden Cost of Doing Nothing
Every month you spend "avoiding" sales is a month your business stays smaller than it should be.
Think about the cost of that missing sale. If your average client is worth £500, that’s £6,000 a year you’re missing out on simply because you’re worried about being "pushy."
You can have one more sale per month. You don't need a cold-calling script or a manipulative closing technique. You just need a system that respects your integrity and your customer’s intelligence.
Our 4-step system is designed to take the stress out of the process. It’s about being a real human being who happens to have a valuable solution to someone else’s problem.
